Hello future Raider Band Members!
Now that we have gotten to the other side of UIL, I wanted to reach out and congratulate each of you on a wonderful season of making music in your band halls! Over at Taft, we are now changing gears to our band placement auditions for the 24-25 school year, and that includes YOU! I’m excited to hear the next version of the Taft Raider Band!
Here is all the information that you need to know.

Please share this letter to anyone that will be attending John Jay HS next year. This information has our camp dates, parent meeting day & time, and other information needed for the student.
Tryouts for the JJHS Marching Band will be on Thursday May 15th and Friday May 16th on pp.1, 3, & 4 of the JJHS Band Warm-Ups that have been sent with this email. These tryouts are only to see what part they will be playing during the season. Percussion auditions will be set. by Mr. Ramos after the indoor season is over. Mr. Zeigler will set up guard auditions after our winter season is finished.

8th Grade to Health Careers HS
Band Audition Procedure
We are happy you have chosen to be a part of the Health Careers Band. Your audition is to determine which band class best fits your instrument and skill level. We accept anyone who has previously played a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument into our band classes, or anyone who wishes to begin participation in band. Please note that without an audition you will automatically be scheduled for a Non-Varsity ensemble.
Submit your audition electronically as an audio/video file to cathryn.fowler@nisd.net. The deadline for submitting auditions is April 11th.
Please type the following in your email:
- First and last name
- Middle School you are attending
- Awards and recognitions
Required audition materials to record are as follows:
- A solo or region etude that demonstrates your abilities.
- You can also include a chromatic scale that shows your current range on your instrument. Please note this is not required, but it would be great to hear!
Band Director, Cathryn Fowler
Symphonic Band: the top, Varsity level band at HCHS. Symphonic Band performs a variety of repertoire from a wide range of styles and composers. This competitive group participates in UIL Concert & Sight-Reading and Solo & Ensemble, as well as TMEA’s Region, Area, and All-State competitions. Pre-requisites: prior experience in a Middle School or High School Band. Placement is by audition.
Concert Band: the junior varsity level band composed of students that have prior experience playing an instrument. Concert Band performs a variety of music from a wide range of composers. Opportunity to audition and perform with the Symphonic Band is offered to those who progress. Placement is by audition.
Jazz Band: a competitive ensemble that performs regularly and competes at jazz festivals. Jazz Band is open to all experienced music students interested in learning jazz repertoire, jazz auditory styles, and jazz improvisational skills. Placement is by audition.
